About This Project
Keith, a Madera school teacher, and his wife Jennifer, Madera’s District Attorney at the time, were referred to us by a family member. At first, Keith and Jennifer needed help with small home projects. But, they were thinking long-term and had some money to invest when a friend of theirs mentioned he had a property on Bass Lake that he wanted to sell. Once Keith learned that I have experience in construction and contracting, he asked me to advise him about his investment. After inspecting the property, I told Keith that it was a good deal and he should buy it, so he purchased the property and asked me to do a complete house remodel, turning it into what we now call the Bass Lake Castle.
We started demolition on the guest house right away. When the guest house was finished, Kieth got a loan on the value of the property to start remodeling on the main house. The house was big and needed to be remodeled from the inside-out. We added a bridge to connect the existing 3-car garage to the house and added two apartments above the 3-car garage. We built block walls and reinforced them with rebar and rock over the block for finished look.
80 yards of stamped concrete were added to the property as driveways. Castle-look doors were hand-made by us. Windows and doors were all new. For the entrance we built a draw bridge. Three waterfalls were built onto the property. Retaining walls for maintaining the level of ground were added to accommodate for the house being built on a hill. Also we installed water and irrigation systems for house, lawn and garden. A family room was added to the house. In the room we built a fireplace and two bars.
The property was bought for $75,000, with two bank loans, one of $300,000 and an additional $300,000, bringing the house to a total cost including property, labor and materials of $675,000. The house was put on the market for $1.5 million. The property was sold, and since then I continued to work for him investing in houses after this project for two more years.
